If this were a job interview, Romelu Lukaku may not have new employers in the summer. He may yet lead the line for Chelsea next season, but this was scarcely proof they need his services. He appears a prospective replacement for Costa, should the latter head for manchester city either Atletico Madrid or China. Lukaku’s ambition was evident when he spurned Everton’s offer of a new contract. A return to Stamford Bridge may beckon. Everton have benefited from his capacity to run riot against lesser sides. Chelsea, given their greater aspirations, may want more.
