Over the last 10 years (2007-16), 38 percent of teams that have started the season ranked in the AP poll ended it unranked, which comes out to about 10 teams per season. That includes an average of two top-10 teams per year that wash out.

Heat check: The Bulls are the lone team outside the Power Five in the preseason rankings. History suggests those conferences will be better represented in the final poll. USF has a nonconference schedule that has fans talking about an undefeated season. Not so fast. The American Athletic Conference should present challenges and all the hype can be hard to live up to.

Heat check: If any team in the Pac-12 is going to get in the way of a possible playoff play-in between USC and Washington in the Pac-12 title game, it’s the Cardinal. They also have a quarterback coming off major knee surgery and are replacing two top-10 picks.

Ohio’s chief inspector of amusement ride safety, Michael Vartorella, said the Fire Ball was inspected three or four times before the fair opened. He said some work on all the rides was delayed by heavy rains last week but the inspections were completed and not rushed.

Darnold completed 19 of 35 passes for 266 yards, and Tyler Vaughns had six catches for 126 yards with a pair of scores. Jones helped the Trojans pick up 341 yards rushing after they were limited to 76 against the Fighting Irish.

Forty-three of the rides, also known as the Afterburner, are in use around the world, 11 of them in the U.S., according to KMG. None has had a serious malfunction before, the company told the AP.

Heat check: Bill Snyder has his best team since Heisman finalist Collin Klein led the Wildcats to a Big 12 title in 2012. K-State is more likely to overachieve this season and finish in the top 10 than underachieve and wind up unranked.

McSorley completed 15 of 28 passes for 164 yards, helping the Nittany Lions (2-0) avenge a loss to their in-state rivals a year ago. Tight end Mike Gesicki had two touchdown receptions and Barkley ran for 88 yards to help Penn State ended a two-game skid against the Panthers.

Heat check: Nine has been the spot where the volatility really picks up. From 2007-16, teams ranked ninth or lower in the preseason finished ranked only about 55 percent of the time. Wisconsin expects improvement from QB Alex Hornibrook, but also spent a chunk of the offseason looking into grad transfers. A defense that carried a so-so offense last season has a first-year coordinator in Jim Leonhard and has already lost star LB Jack Cichy to a season-ending injury. Among top-10 teams, Wisconsin is most likely to disappoint.

Pettis returned a punt for a score for the second straight game. His 61-yard return at Rutgers last week tied him with DeSean Jackson for the conference mark and ignited Washington (2-0) after a sluggish start.

Heat check: Jim Harbaugh has to replace a mountain of talent. That’s no way for college football’s most-celebrated coach who has never won an FBS conference title to climb out of third place in the Big Ten East. Though for many top coaches, year three is often a breakthrough season.

Heat check: The Hokies exceeded expectations in year one under Justin Fuente, and will need him to work a little magic with another first-year starting quarterback (redshirt freshman Josh Jackson) to avoid going the opposite way this season.

“All of my teachers did not go to Vietnam – they found a way not to go – and every single one of them was trying to talk me into going to Navy,” Caslen said. “They said, ‘Don’t go to West Point. The Tigers’ defense made sure that was more than enough to hold off the Yellow Jackets (4-3, 3-2). Clemson had 11 tackles for loss and held Georgia Tech’s league-leading – and often confounding – triple-option run game to 198 yards, 175 fewer than their average. TaQuon Marshall, the ACC’s leading rusher with 117 yard average, managed just 23 yards that included his 22-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

Brown is massive (6-foot-8, 345 pounds), athletic and a potential high first-round draft pick. He protects Baker Mayfield’s blindside. Brown will be protecting the Heisman Trophy front-runner from the reigning national defensive player of the week. Boesen set a school and Big 12 record with 5 ½ sacks against Baylor on Saturday. He leads the conference with 11 sacks on the season.

Heat check: This might be Jimbo Fisher’s best team since the Seminoles won the national title in 2013. Finishing outside the rankings would be shocking, but the schedule is nasty. This seems like a good time to note that from 2007-16 only about half the teams that started the season ranked in the top 10 finished that way.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Maryland tried to mix things up right from the start Saturday, trying a flea-flicker on its first offensive play. Ohio State linebacker Dante Booker wasn’t fooled. He sacked Max Bortenschlager for a 4-yard loss.

They played 6-on-4 after pulling Ranta for the last 1:12, but Bobrovsky held them off with the help of two key blocked shots.

– 15.4 teams (61.6 percent total) started the season ranked and finished the season ranked. Those teams finished an average of 6.34 places (higher or lower) from where they were ranked in the preseason.

“Their guy went around the net and went post to post,” Ranta said. “I went down and thought I had all the angles covered, but he shot past me on the far side. I need to make that save. It’s pretty simple.”

Schiff also questioned Trump’s capability. “There’s some attribute of his character that makes him seemingly incapable of introspection and a broad understanding of what the country really needs. And I think it’s a question that people are asking, you know, what is going on with this president?”

Agriculture Department spokesman Mark Bruce said Friday that 28 rides were cleared to resume operations Friday afternoon. Those reopened include the children’s carousel, bumper boats and other “low-impact” attractions including the Giant Slide and SkyGlider.

Darnold went 21 of 26 with 316 yards passing for the Trojans (2-0, 1-0 Pac-12), who snapped their three-game losing streak in this California private-school rivalry. USC racked up 623 total yards and won the first Pac-12 game of the new season by beating the hard-nosed Cardinal (1-1, 0-1) at their own physical game.

Heat check: The Bulldogs are working on two straight seasons of being ranked in the preseason but unranked at the end. So here they are again. Improvement from the offensive line and sophomore quarterback Jacob Eason could mean a big step forward in year two under coach Kirby Smart. More likely a small step forward keeps the Bulldogs from disappointing again.

UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen was 12 of 21 passing for 93 yards and was sacked four times. Rosen was pulled midway through the third quarter and later was on the sideline in sweats. He had been limping after being sacked in the second quarter by Washington’s Austin Joyner. Rosen threw a 7-yard TD pass to Jordan Wilson in the second quarter, but Washington scored the next 27 points.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission also is investigating. It estimates there were 30,900 injuries associated with amusement attractions that required emergency room visits last year. It said there have been at least 22 deaths associated with amusement attractions in the U.S. since 2010.

Last week, Sessions told cities they must meet the same conditions or lose out on millions of dollars from a separate grant program that helps police departments pay for everything from bulletproof vests to body cameras, a move that made some local officials more defiant.

“At our meeting, Coach basically said this is probably one of the best times USA Hockey is going through right now, with the strength of the teams we have, the players in the NHL, the strength of colleges nowadays,” said defenseman Andrew Peeke, who is playing college hockey at Notre Dame . “It’s just an awesome time.”

The game has seen tremendous growth in the U.S. since the early 1990s, leading to more rinks, kids getting involved earlier, better instruction and more competitive select leagues. The 555,000 registered hockey players in America this year is up from about 195,000 in 1991, according to USA Hockey. Participation is up 21 percent just in the past decade.

Maryland: The Terps may be improved – they beat Texas and Minnesota this season – but not enough to compete with Ohio State’s athletes. And it’s going to be a harder road if Bortenschlager can’t come back.

Marchand came out of the box and tied the game 40 seconds later, scoring the Bruins’ second power-play goal of the night with assists by Bergeron and Pastrnak. It was Marchand’s eighth goal of the season and the 200th of his career.

Coach Nick Saban’s program has become the surest thing in sports these days. The Tide does not always win the national championship – just half the time over the last eight years – but is always in contention. Since 2008, only once has Alabama lost more than one game before bowl season.

Regardless, “by taking simple, commonsense considerations into account, we are encouraging every jurisdiction in this country to cooperate with federal law enforcement,” Sessions said in a statement that accompanied the letters. “That will ultimately make all of us safer – especially law enforcement on our streets.”

Cities that want to be involved going forward will have to show they allow unfettered communication between police and federal immigration authorities, give agents access to jails in order to question immigrants and provide agents with 48 hours of notice when someone in the country illegally is about to be released.

After a pair of unsuccessful power plays, Columbus found the back of the net again with less than three minutes left in the first period. Boone Jenner, playing in his fifth game after returning from injury, scratched and clawed at Markus Nutivaara’s rebound until he put it past Rask at 17:08. Josh Anderson was also credited with an assist on Jenner’s first goal of the season.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) – Attorney General Jeff Sessions took new steps Thursday to punish cities he believes are not cooperating with federal immigration agents in a move that was met with bewilderment by local officials who said they did not know why they were being singled out.

Peeke, a second-round draft pick by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2016, is one of two players on the preliminary roster from Florida, a region not exactly known for producing elite hockey prospects. But the growth of the NHL – Miami and Tampa got teams in the early 1990s – and more media exposure has helped youth hockey make inroads in nontraditional markets in the South and West.

The Crimson Tide received 52 of 61 first-place votes from media members in the poll released Monday. Ohio State was No. 2, edging No. 3 Florida State and preventing the first 1 vs. 2 opening game since the preseason poll began in 1950. Alabama opens the season against the Seminoles in Atlanta on Sept. 2, just the fourth opener involving top-five teams and the first pitting teams ranked in the preseason top three.

Mayfield lived up to his billing as a Heisman Trophy contender in shifting the Sooners (2-0) into overdrive and piling up the yards in the second half as the Buckeyes’ offense sputtered. Oklahoma took its first lead near the end of the third quarter and cruised in the fourth.

The sixth straight victory by Brian Kelly’s Irish, now 7-1, avenged a 10-3 loss at N.C. State last year in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. N.C. State (6-2) saw its six-game winning streak come to an end.

One thing has changed since Villanueva graduated in 2010: Monken has guided Army (8-3) to consecutive winning seasons for the first time since Young’s last two years (1989-90). After the Black Knights play Navy on Saturday, they will then chase a second straight bowl victory, too.OPEN CUP (DATE): Sporting Kansas City will have a chance at its third U.S. Open Cup title this decade after outlasting San Jose 5-4 on penalty kicks in the semifinals after the sides played to a 1-1 draw. Sporting Kansas City will host the final after winning the title in 2012 and 2015.

Only once since the AP poll expanded to 25 teams in 1989 has the preseason No. 1 finished the season unranked (Lane Kiffin’s 2012 Southern California team). In fact, since the preseason poll began in 1950, the only other times a preseason No. 1 finished unranked were during the early 1960s, when the rankings briefly only went to 10.

It’s not as dramatic as a year ago when Seattle made a midseason coaching change and needed a late surge just to make the playoffs. But it has been an impressive switch after the defending champions slogged through the first few months of the season.

Trump’s upcoming week also includes travel to Arizona to visit a Marine Corps facility in Yuma and hold a campaign rally in Phoenix on Tuesday. He stops in Reno, Nevada, on Wednesday to address the American Legion convention.

The biggest roster announcement of the transfer period doesn’t even impact this year’s title race. LAFC announced Mexican star Carlos Vela as its first designated player, signing the striker from La Liga club Real Sociedad. Vela will join LAFC after the first of the year as it prepares for its expansion season in 2018.

While there are two months left in the regular season and no team in the Western Conference has adequately separated itself – the top seven teams are separated by six points – Seattle getting to the top would cap another dramatic summer turnaround.

BEST OF THE WEEK: New York City FC star David Villa moved into the lead for the Golden Boot with a hat trick in a 3-2 win over the rival New York Red Bulls in the Hudson River Derby. Villa was named the league’s player of the week and now has a league-high 17 goals.

The Oilers scored twice in the last minute of the period. Lucic made it 4-0 when he chipped in another power play goal with 51 seconds left, and Letestu got a short-handed goal on a breakaway with 1 second remaining.

Heat check: Penn State went on a magical run to the Big Ten title last season after a 2-2 start. There are lots of reasons to believe what the Nittany Lions did was sustainable, starting with the return of RB Saquon Barkley. But magical seasons can be tough to repeat and Penn State seems primed for a market correction.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Julian Love returned his second interception of the season for a touchdown and running back Josh Adams had another big day, rushing for 202 yards, to help Notre Dame beat North Carolina State.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Inspectors repeatedly looked over a thrill ride while it was assembled at the Ohio State Fair and signed off on it hours before it flew apart in a deadly accident that flung passengers into the ground, according to authorities and records released Thursday.

“You want to keep building, keep working hard to sharpen up to be better,” Seattle forward Clint Dempsey said. “But things are looking good. We are where we want to be in terms of putting ourselves in a position to make playoffs, at the same time, though, we aren’t just happy being in third. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – J.T. Barrett hit Marcus Baugh with a 16-yard touchdown pass with 1:48 left in the fourth quarter and No. 6 Ohio State rallied from 11 points down in the final five minutes to hand No. 2 Penn State its first loss, 39-38 on Saturday.

The Justice Department sent letters to four cities struggling with gun violence, telling them they would not be eligible for a program that provides money to combat drug trafficking and gang crime unless they give federal immigration authorities access to jails and notify agents before releasing inmates wanted on immigration violations.

“You can’t keep putting new people in the lineup and think you’re going to win a world championship,” said Kasich, who is among those who think the staff churn is hampering Trump’s ability to notch a major legislative victory. He voiced his concerns on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Latest on a letter from the Justice Department threatening to keep federal crime-fighting resources from cities that don’t cooperate with federal immigration authorities: (all times local):

In 2015, Iowa went about the business of going 12-0 with a meh schedule in the Big Ten West and came up a few plays short of making the College Football Playoff. Coleman scored on runs of 1, 33 and 13 yards, and Browning added a 1-yard quarterback sneak early in the second quarter after it appeared Gaskin had scored on the previous play.

The ride’s operator, Amusements of America, submitted paperwork to the Ohio State Fair showing it completed ultrasonic testing of the ride’s 24 gondola arm pins last October. But it’s not clear whether the tests examined the area where the carriage broke.

Heat check: Two straight SEC East titles never felt less exciting. Notre Dame transfer QB Malik Zaire brings hope for an improved offense, though the defense that has been so dominant during Jim McElwain’s first two seasons probably won’t be as good. The Gators get Michigan to begin the regular season and Florida State to end it.

“There’s a correlation between us being at war and us losing, there really is,” said Villaneuva, who served three tours of duty in Afghanistan and won a Bronze Star Medal for Valor. “If you’re in 2006, would you want to go to Army knowing you’re 100 percent going to be put at the front lines? Or would you rather go to the Naval Academy … (where) the chances of you going to actual combat are very limited and easily avoided?

Heat check: The narrative is Charlie Strong left some good players for Tom Herman to work with at Texas. The Longhorns also are coming off three straight losing seasons. If nothing else, Texas should break that streak.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – McKenzie Milton threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns and scored another on the ground and No. 18 UCF reinforced its reputation for having one of the most explosive offenses in the country with a win over Austin Peay.

Five days after John Kelly ran for four touchdowns in Tennessee’s 42-41 double-overtime triumph over Georgia Tech, he shared the spotlight with his backups in a game that had much less suspense. Kelly ran for 80 yards and caught five passes for 60 yards to lead the Volunteers (2-0) in rushing and receiving, but two guys below him on the depth chart scored Tennessee’s first three touchdowns.

The Justice Department sent letters to four cities telling them they will be ineligible for an anti-violence program if they don’t help detain and deport people in the country illegally. The cities – Baltimore, Albuquerque, and Stockton and San Bernardino, California – had expressed interest in the Public Safety Partnership. It offers agents, analysts and technology to find solutions to crime.

The Associated Press has been honoring college football’s best with an All-America team since 1925. This season, the AP released its first preseason All-America team and its first midseason team. The full three-team All-America selections are announced in December. The final installment of the weekly All-America watch features matchups to watch in each of this weekend’s championship games. The AP All-America team will be released Dec. 11.

The ride’s Dutch manufacturer has told operators of the attraction at fairs and festivals worldwide to stop using it until more is learned about what caused the malfunction. Ohio Gov. John Kasich shut down all rides for new inspections after the accident.

Those decisions seem to be paying off. And now there are reinforcements. Seattle answered its biggest question by signing Dutch right back Kelvin Leerdam and added midfield depth by signing Spanish midfielder Victor Rodriguez and trading to acquire veteran Lamar Neagle.

“We had some opportunities early in the game where we needed to make a play and respond, and we didn’t,” Maryland coach D.J. Durkin said. “We didn’t play well as a team. When the offense needed to pick up the defense, they didn’t. When the defense needed to pick up the offense, they didn’t. We were out of sync.”The Blue Jackets have won 10 out of their last 13 as the top line of Anderson, Artemi Panarin and Pierre-Luc Dubois continued to generate much of the offense as other usually reliable players have struggled. Panarin – who had five assists in the 5-3 win at New Jersey on Friday night – and Dubois each earned helpers on Anderson’s goal.

“I wouldn’t say that we are exactly where we need to be, but I definitely like where we are at,” H-back Parris Campbell said. “We are making progress week by week, and I think we are getting better, but I think we still leave too much on the field.”

The threat marks Sessions’ latest effort to force local authorities to help federal agents detain and deport people living in the country illegally as part of a push to reduce crime he believes is linked to illegal immigration. The attorney general has repeatedly vowed to withhold federal money from cities that do not cooperate, similar to how previous administrations have held back highway funds during debates over the speed limit and drinking age.

The White House said Bannon and new White House chief of staff John Kelly had “mutually agreed” that Friday would be Bannon’s last day. Bannon immediately resumed his role as executive chairman of the conservative Breitbart News website, which he led before joining Trump campaign.

In May, Sessions instructed the nation’s federal prosecutors to bring the toughest charges possible against most crime suspects. Critics assailed the move as a return to failed drug-war policies that unduly affected minorities and filled prisons with nonviolent offenders.

What was expected to be a Heisman-worthy season for Darnold has not quite worked out. Too many interceptions (12) have been the biggest problem, but Darnold is also second in the Pac-12 in efficiency rating (147.44) and leads in yards per attempt (8.4). Reid has been everywhere for Stanford, leading the team in both interceptions (five) and tackles (88).

Stamkos missed the final 65 games last season with a torn meniscus in the knee, an injury that required surgery. He sent a pass from the left circle through the slot to Vladislav Namestnikov, who put Tampa Bay up 3-2 from near the post 59 seconds into the final period during a power play.

Worst loss (though the Tigers were playing with a hurt quarterback and then a backup quarterback), but the best set of victories among the top teams. The committee doesn’t seem to get too hung up on quality of loss. Heat check agrees. Expect Clemson in the CFP top four.

Dubinsky put Columbus in front in the first period. Tyler Motte grabbed a loose rebound in the defensive zone and fired a long pass that Dubinsky carried in and stuffed past Ward with a backhand. It was Dubinsky’s second goal of the season, giving him four points in the last four games.

– The other three playoff teams each have one player on the first team, all on the defensive side. No. 3 Georgia, which faces Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl semifinal on Jan. 1, is represented by linebacker Roquan Smith. No. 1 Clemson placed defensive end Clelin Ferrell on the first team. Alabama safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is the only player to make first-team All-America for the second straight season. The Tigers face the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl semifinal on Jan. 1.

Murray hopes to have Getzlaf back by mid-December and Kesler before Christmas. He thinks acquiring Henrique gives coach Randy Carlyle plenty of options to either stack the middle or move him to wing once Getzlaf, Kesler and Rickard Rakell are healthy.TOUGH SCHEDULES: Maryland has played the second-toughest schedule in the country in terms of opponents’ winning percentage, and Michigan State’s is third-toughest. The difference is that the Terps are going through the hardest part of theirs right now.

The Crimson Tide became the first program in 12 years to take the top spot in The Associated Press preseason media poll two straight years, and will start the season ranked in the top five for the ninth consecutive time.

Such prescription opioids are behind the deadliest drug overdose epidemic in U.S. history. More than 52,000 Americans died of overdoses in 2015 – a record – and experts believe the numbers have continued to rise. Sessions has made aggressive prosecutions of drug crime a top priority, saying the deadly overdoses necessitate a return to tougher tactics.

Heat check: The Cowboys became a trendy top team when QB Mason Rudolph and WR James Washington decided put off the NFL for another year. Still, are they really that much better than Kansas State, Texas or even TCU? Big 12 teams outside Oklahoma are always risky bets.

The Huskies need the committee to like them more than the AP voters, because their schedule doesn’t provide many opportunities to make big jumps down the stretch. They also need to make that Arizona State loss look like a fluke.

Team USA routed Belarus 14-0 on Wednesday and had another exhibition game Friday night against Sweden ahead of the tournament’s opening round next week. The U.S. team has Dec. 29 circled and recircled on the calendar – that’s the day the Americans play Canada in the tournament’s first outdoor game, at New Era Field, home of the Buffalo Bills.

Columbus (19-11-1) is battling for Metropolitan Division supremacy but couldn’t get on track against the Oilers and didn’t make Brossoit work exceptionally hard. They played so poorly that coach John Tortorella didn’t know what to say. His postgame comments lasted all of 15 seconds.

Nick Bonino left the Stanley Cup-champion Penguins to sign a four-year, $16.4 million deal with Western Conference champion Nashville . The Predators freed up cap space to sign Bonino by trading center Colin Wilson to Colorado for a 2019 fourth-round draft pick.

Tyler Jarrell, of Columbus, was thrown about 50 feet (15 meters) and pronounced dead on the midway. The Marine Corps and school officials said Jarrell enlisted last week and was to begin basic training after his high school graduation next year.

Vatanen has just a goal and three assists this season playing on a crowded blue line with Hampus Lindholm, Cam Fowler, Josh Manson and Brandon Montour. He’s signed for two more seasons at a salary-cap hit of $4.875 million.

What one-loss team ranked outside the top 10 is best positioned to vault into the playoff race? That would be Auburn. It’s a long shot, but beat Georgia, Alabama and Georgia again in the SEC title game and, voila, the Tigers are in the playoff. OK, it’s a really long shot.

Max Bortenschlager, who missed last week’s game with an apparent head injury, is expected to return Saturday. Sophomore Ryan Brand, who got his first career start against Michigan, will be available if needed.

The go-ahead goal came after New York defenseman Johnny Boychuk tied the game with the Islanders on a two-man advantage. Boychuk finished off a passing play at 7:13 of the middle period with his third goal of the season, assisted by Bailey and John Tavares.

The Bulldogs have outscored their opposition by 26 points per game. Alabama’s differential is about 33 per game, and their schedules are comparable – at least according to the Sagarin Ratings: Alabama, 55th in Division I; Georgia 51st. The Dawgs will be no worse than No. 2 on Tuesday.

Quarterback Jake Browning was mostly a nonfactor because he didn’t need to throw; Gaskin and his friends had more than enough success on the ground.

Nikita Kucherov got his league-leading 25th goal of the season, and Steven Stamkos and Cory Conacher also scored for the Lightning. Brayden Point, Mikhail Sergachev and Victor Hedman had two assists apiece.

Heat check: The question in Columbus is whether new offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson and new quarterback coach Ryan Day make J.T. Barrett and the Buckeyes be more effective against defenses they can’t simply overwhelm. Urban Meyer has enough elite athletes to keep Ohio State from its first unranked finish since he took over in 2012.

Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, urged “more cleaning house” at the White House, echoing some fellow Democrats in naming policy adviser Stephen Miller and national security aide Sebastian Gorka as two who should be fired.

SWAN SONG: The Spartans will recognize 15 players in a Senior Day pregame ceremony. This is their home finale. Michigan State’s senior class has won 33 games, tied for the seventh-most in program history. That includes last season’s swoon and this year’s improvement.

Heat check: Replacing a quarterback as great as Deshaun Watson is hard and history suggests a step back is to be expected. The Tigers have enough talent to make another playoff run, but uncertainty at quarterback creates volatility. The idea that Clemson could go from winning a national championship to finishing unranked a year later seems plausible.

The conditional pick is exchanged in 2019 if the Ducks sign Henrique prior to making their third-round pick at that draft and in 2020 if they sign him afterward. If they don’t re-sign Henrique, no pick is exchanged.

Zach Werenski had a goal and an assist, and Josh Anderson also scored for the Blue Jackets, who won their first game after their season-best six-game winning streak ended. Columbus has won five in a row at home.

The Tide lost two first-place votes during its off week to Georgia mostly because the Bulldogs’ victory at Notre Dame looks better every week while Alabama beating Florida State looks less impressive. It wouldn’t be shocking if the committee goes with the Bulldogs at No. 1 for that same reason, but the Tide has done all it could to be on top.

Tampa Bay broke through in the second. Johnson scored his 11th goal of the season with a wrist shot from the right circle, set up nicely by Point. Johnson put in his second goal of the night from the other circle 4:49 into the second, assisted again by Point and Sergachev.

Justin Williams signed a two-year, $9 million contract to return to Carolina, where he won a Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2004. Williams spent the past two seasons with the Washington Capitals, where he combined for 46 goals and 100 points.

The Blue Jackets struggled to get the puck out of their zone in the early going, and the first period ended with the Oilers up 1-0. Kassian scored his third goal of the season 5:55 into the game when he got a feed from Letestu across the front of the net and an open look from the doorstep.

Heat check: A strong finish to last season, plus the hiring of creative offensive coordinator Matt Canada might be masking some issues such as offensive line depth. And just how productive the Tigers will be at quarterback is still anybody’s guess. In a way, the season has played out the way Schmetzer and general manager Garth Lagerwey expected. MAKING MOVES: The secondary transfer window closed this week and there was a flurry of moves as teams set their rosters for the final stretch of the regular season. While a number of teams made relatively minor moves at the deadline, most notable was the major overhaul by last place D.C. United as it looks toward next year and the opening of its new stadium. D.C. The family of a teenager killed when a spinning and swinging amusement park ride broke apart at the Ohio State Fair and threw people to the ground says it’s seeking justice and has retained a law firm to file a wrongful-death suit.

Penn State led 38-27 with 5:42 left and it looked as if the Nittany Lions were going to knock the Buckeyes out of the College Football Playoff race and put a firm grip on the Big Ten East. Saquon Barkley scored two long touchdowns for Penn State, but it was Barrett who surged into the Heisman Trophy race in what was billed as the Big Ten game of the year and lived up to the hype.

Jarrell’s girlfriend was among those seriously injured, her mother told The Columbus Dispatch. Keziah Lewis, a University of Cincinnati student, doesn’t remember the accident and has pelvis, ankle and rib injuries, Clarissa Williams said.

“The Kopitar line – not only were they good defensively – but they carried the load offensively,” Stevens said. “It was kind of an up and down game but they stayed with it. It’s not surprising they put the puck in the net at the end of the game.The Spartans went 3-9 last year but appear to be back on track in 2017, last weekend’s blowout loss at Ohio State notwithstanding. The Sounders are unbeaten in their past seven matches, and coming off last week’s 4-0 rout of Minnesota, Seattle can move into a tie on top of the Western Conference with a win at home Saturday against first place Sporting Kansas City.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Pierre-Luc Dubois scored in his NHL debut and Sergei Bobrovsky made 29 saves in the Columbus Blue Jackets’ 5-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Friday night in the NHL season opener for both teams.

The trade for Emelin cost the Predators a 2019 third-round pick – and just over $1.9 million in salary with Vegas retaining just under $1.2 million – but gives them an even stronger defense behind the top four of Roman Josi, P.K. Subban, Mattias Ekholm and Ryan Ellis.

Tyler Jarrell, of Columbus, was killed and seven people were injured, several critically, when the swinging and spinning ride broke apart. A coroner says Jarrell died from blunt force trauma. He would have been a high school senior and recently enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps.

“It wasn’t something I was expecting,” Henrique said. “With everything going on in Anaheim with the injuries, it just makes sense. I think the Devils have obviously been looking for a defenseman, and I think everything kind of came together the last day or two here.”

Anders Lee had two goals, and Anthony Beauvillier, Andrew Ladd and Jason Chimera also scored for New York, which lost at home in regulation for the first time this season (8-1-2). Thomas Greiss started and was also pulled after giving up five goals on 20 shots. Jaroslav Halak replaced him and finished with 14 saves.

“My head coach took me out of the classroom and introduced me to coach Waugh,” Bradshaw recalled. “I said, ‘Thank you, sir (for the offer).’ Then I kind of whispered to my coach, ‘What’s West Point?’ That was the first time I heard of it.”

Their opponent for next month’s final will be decided next week when FC Cincinnati hosts the New York Red Bulls. Cincinnati has already knocked off MLS sides Columbus and Chicago earlier in the tournament and advanced to the semifinals with a 1-0 win over fellow USL club Miami FC.

It also averted what would have been a blistering defeat for a party divided between fervent conservatives demanding the evisceration of Mr Obama’s statute and centrists intent on not pulling coverage away from millions of Americans.

“They’re coming off a loss as well so I know their focus will be up this whole week,” Maryland coach DJ Durkin said. “That’s a program with a lot of pride, for sure. … Big challenge for our guys. I really believe our guys are up for the challenge and will respond.”

“We missed the coverage,” he said simply. “I don’t think we played it that well in the corner, but it’s still a 30 foot pass cross ice. (Calvert) sees the guy and just lets him get behind. That’s a very defendable goal. …That’s an was coverage.”

Clemson has the ACC’s best offensive line with Crowder and offensive tackle Mitch Hyatt both among the best in the country at their positions. They lead a running game that ranks third in the conference in yards per carry (5.11) and first in rushing touchdowns (36). Miami’s defensive line doesn’t get quite the acclaim that Clemson’s does, but the Hurricanes feature a bunch of future pros, too, led by McIntosh. The junior lead the teams with 11 ½ tackles for loss. The Hurricanes have allowed only six rushing touchdowns.

DOUBLE THREAT: Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke threw for only 156 yards in a loss to Maryland last season, but he ran for 79. The Spartans had 270 yards rushing in that game, and the Terps had 247.

Video taken by a bystander of the ride in action captured a crashing sound. A section holding four riders came apart, and screams could be heard as at least two people were ejected and plunged to the ground.

Boeser, after scoring twice against Philadelphia on Tuesday, added two more and now has 11 this season. Former Penguin defenseman Derrick Pouliot scored a power-play goal, his first with Vancouver. Loui Eriksson, playing in his 800th career game, scored his second. Brandon Sutter, another former Penguin, scored an empty-net goal for the Canucks, who won in Pittsburgh for the first time since Dec. 4, 2014. “We played with speed tonight,” Staal said. “We were skating, but moving the puck better, too. Our execution has been slowly improving, and it’s a continuing process we have to do day in and day out if we want to win games.”

Sessions has pledged to make fighting immigration and street crime the Justice Department’s top priority, but the strategy is putting him at odds with some city leaders, who say the best way to fight crime and build community trust is to keep local police out of federal immigration matters.

Nugent-Hopkins got a wide-open look 6:27 in, and he banged it in from the right circle on a power play. Later, Benning snapped in a shot between Bobrovsky’s pads from the high slot, leading to the goalie’s uncharacteristic show of frustration.

Prosecutors said Thursday there isn’t enough evidence to bring criminal charges in the deadly thrill ride accident at this year’s Ohio State Fair that killed a high school student and injured seven other people.

Baltimore, Albuquerque, and Stockton and San Bernardino in California all expressed interest in the Justice Department’s Public Safety Partnership, which enlists federal agents, analysts and technology to help communities find solutions to crime.

Hartnell spent his first six seasons in Nashville after he was drafted No. 6 overall in 2000. He went on to play for the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons, becoming a first-time All-Star in 2012 while playing for Peter Laviolette, who is now behind the bench in Nashville.

“It was determined that excessive corrosion on the interior of the gondola support beam dangerously reduced the beam’s wall thickness over the years,” the statement said. “This finally led to a catastrophic failure of the ride during operation.”

Jake Guentzel scored twice, both on the power play, for Pittsburgh and now has eight this season. The Penguins started the season with wins in seven of their first 11, but now have just four wins in their last 12. Pittsburgh gave up two power-play goals for the second straight game and has allowed 10 in its last six.

Heat check: The false alarms for the Hurricanes return to prominence have been plentiful in recent years. Uncertainty at quarterback tempers the enthusiasm for Mark Richt’s second season as coach, but the ‘Canes seem less likely to flame out this time.

Bjorkstrand tied it, burying a rebound from David Savard past Quick at 8:00, and Columbus made it 3-2 at 14:02 when Calvert corralled a bouncing puck that had been manhandled toward the net by Jack Johnson and Josh Anderson.

The Predators need him in part because they traded center Colin Wilson to the Colorado Avalanche for a fourth-round pick in 2019. Nashville drafted Wilson No. 7 overall in 2008 and he had 95 goals and 237 points for the franchise.

Ohio Department of Agriculture records showed passing marks on inspections for Fire Ball on about three dozen items, including possible cracks, brakes, proper assembly and installation. Michael Vartorella, Ohio’s chief inspector of amusement ride safety, said the Fire Ball was inspected three or four times before the fair opened.

With both teams skating 4-on-4 in the third period thanks to penalties on Calvert and Brad Marchand, Torey Krug caught Bobrovsky moving side to side and made it 3-2 at 10:26. Assists went to Kevan Miller and Pastrnak.

– Wisconsin placed five players on the three teams, led by linebacker T.J. Edwards on the first team. Running back Jonathan Taylor and tight Troy Fumagalli made the second team and offensive linemen David Edwards and Beau Benzschawel made the third team.

An effort had failed to have his Cambridge home listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Officials said the National Park Service considered his home in nearby New Concord, beginning at age 2, “most suitable” because it’s where Glenn lived during a historically significant period in this life.

Heat check: The Sooners have some recent history of face-planting after starting in the top 10. In 2009, they started third and finished unranked when QB Sam Bradford was injured in the opening game. In 2014, OU went from No. 4 to out of the final rankings. Part of the reason Bob Stoops stepped aside this offseason was because he believed he was leaving the program in good shape for new coach Lincoln Riley. Having QB Baker Mayfield should help, but you never know what kind of head coach a guy is going to be until he is actually a head coach.

“In recent years some of the government officials in our country I think have mistakenly sent mixed messages about the harmfulness of drugs,” Sessions said. “So let me say: We cannot capitulate intellectually or morally unto this kind of rampant drug abuse. We must create a culture that’s hostile to drug abuse.”

Amusements of America co-owner John Vivona told WCMH-TV in Columbus on Friday the company is “devastated.” He’s convinced the Fire Ball accident Wednesday was a mechanical failure and not a problem with the ride’s operators or inspections. He says state and third-party inspectors examined the ride before the fair opened that day.

Zack Smith, Bobby Ryan, Thomas Chabot and Mike Hoffman also scored for the Senators, who were 0-6-1 since sweeping Colorado in two games in Stockholm on Nov. 10-11. Craig Anderson allowed five goals on 18 shots before he was pulled midway through the second period. Mike Condon came on and stopped all 19 shots he faced, including Jordan Eberle’s point-blank attempt in the closing seconds.

Tyler Jarrell died of blunt force trauma injuries after being tossed 50 feet (15 meters) into the air when the ride broke apart. He was about to begin his senior year in high school and had enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps the week before he was killed.

Sony Michel put third-ranked Georgia up big early and put Florida away late, scoring on two long runs in a 42-7 drubbing that might have been the final game for Gators coach Jim McElwain. It was Florida’s most lopsided loss in the series since a 44-0 shutout in 1982.

In a letter to Sessions, Republican Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry denied that New Mexico’s largest city is a sanctuary for immigrants living in the country illegally and said he has been trying to work with immigration authorities since taking office in 2009. DALLAS (AP) – James Neal scored twice in the third period Friday night, rallying the Golden Knights to a 2-1 NHL victory over the Dallas Stars in the debut of the first major pro sports franchise in Las Vegas.

Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 45 of 46 shots to help the Golden Knights become the first expansion to open with a victory since the Ottawa Senators in 1992. They also spoiled coach Ken Hitchcock’s return to Dallas 18 years after he directed the franchise’s only Stanley Cup title.

Jarnkrok put Nashville ahead to stay, sweeping a rebound past goaltender Joonas Korpisalo at 14:25. The Blue Jackets challenged the goal, contending Kevin Fiala interfered with Korpisalo and kept him from making the save, but it was upheld after a video replay.

Bryant, making his second career start at quarterback for defending national champion Clemson, appeared to be seriously hurt after he remained on the ground on a hit by Dontavius Russell. But after a few moments in the medical tent, Bryant returned to direct a pair of touchdown drives that gave Clemson (2-0) the lead for good. Bryant’s 3-yard run right before halftime put Clemson ahead 7-6. He finished the next possession with a spinning, 27-yard burst.

All rides were shut down Wednesday night after a swinging and spinning ride called the Fire Ball broke apart, killing 18-year-old high school student Tyler Jarrell and injuring seven others, several critically.

Heat check: The Huskies made a big leap into the playoff last season and conventional wisdom is that Chris Petersen will now have Washington a regular contender. Having three-fourths of a secondary drafted in the second round is nothing to brush off, but Petersen and a manageable schedule make Washington a safe play to avoid a big fall.

Columbus got the scoring started after Adrian Kempe’s tripping penalty, which led to Foligno’s power-play goal at 5:43 of the first period. It was Columbus’ first goal with a man advantage after going 0 for 18 in its last six games.

A State Highway Patrol investigation found the ride operators were not to blame. Dutch manufacturer, KMG, said the cause was excessive corrosion of a support beam. The accident resulted in the shutdown of similar rides worldwide.
